My First Guest Blog!

13 Jun

Ok, so you may be excited that I have some amazing guest blogger for you–but I don’t.  It is “just” my sister…but guess what?  I happen to think she IS pretty amazing, and hopefully you will too!  I am hoping you, my wonderful readers, will give my sister some blog love and help her out (please!)!!

Over 2 days in August, I will be participating in the 31st Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) by raising nearly $5000 and riding 192 miles from Sturbridge to Provincetown.  The PMC is an annual bike-a-thon that raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country.  Last year alone, the PMC raised $30 million, and since 1980 has contributed nearly $250 million for cancer research and treatment at Boston’s Dana Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund.

Here I am pretending that I raised all of this money!

This will be second year participating and am very much looking forward to the event, and my sister Michelle asked me to write a guest blog to help raise awareness to my fundraising efforts.

I admittedly procrastinated in writing this.  Aside from simply listing the facts of the event, I was struggling to find the “right’ angle.  I don’t have a heart-wrenching story to share with you that would move you so deeply to donate to my ride.   As a matter of fact, that point became very clear when I was asked a few weeks ago ‘‘do you have a compelling story because certainly that would be a great fundraising hook’..  Well, if that is the case then I hold no hope to raising the minimum $4200 fundraising commitment.

So, the other night while riding my bike I started thinking …

I do not have a story,

I do NOT have a story

I DO NOT HAVE A STORY

I. DO. NOT. HAVE. A. STORY.

Well, that’s it isn’t it?!  I simply don’t have a story and that is a powerful reason to donate to my fundraising.   I ride so I will continue not to have a story, so that Michelle won’t have a story and Carson won’t have a story and anyone who I care about won’t have a story.  I ride because I can and because doing so means that in some small way I have helped prevent some heart-wrenching story from ever beginning.

So blog friends of Michelle … read this non-story and go to my rider page  and make a generous donation knowing that doing so you have helped too.

You might not be able to tell, but behind that sign was a 7-month baby bump. Who knew it was housing the cutest baby ever??

Some of the loved ones I ride for!

So, what do you say?  I know all of you must know SOMEONE affected by cancer.  And if you don’t–well, you are lucky–and you should donate to make sure you can keep it that way.

I will tell you that last year, knowing I had a small little person marinating inside of me, I was moved by what I saw.  I can still see the little girl, holding up a sign with a hole in the middle for her face that said “You are riding for me.  I am a survivor.  Thank you!”  I well up even thinking about it, because it could be me, it could be you, it could be anyone.  I know now what it feels like to have a child and love him so much that you would do anything for him.  That is why I will be donating this year.  I will do it because Carson is healthy and no mom or dad should have to live with anything but a healthy child.

If you couldn’t figure it out for yourself, $4200 is A LOT of money!  Even a small donation will help my sister reach her goal.  Please help in any way you can! (Also, if you want to give me the money, I will be sure my sister gets it!!)

Now, if you haven’t already decided to go and donate, Carson has agreed to try to guilt you into it.  Go ahead and just try to resist his powers of unbelievable cuteness!

Now, you want me to do what with this sign, Mom?

Can I just eat the sign?

How 'bout I eat the sign AND show it to everyone? And oh yeah, please help my Bestie Auntie Jilly!!
